Founded in 1996 by ex-Microsoft employees Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington, videogame publisher, developer and distributer Valve Corporation is one the modern games industry's most influential companies, and much of that success flowed from the massive success of its debut release, Half-Life, on 19 November 1998.
Starring Gordon Freeman as a young theoretical physicist who has an extraordinarily bad day at work when his lab's teleportation equipment accidentally opens a portal to an alien world full of deadly extra-terrestrial creatures.
The game was also a landmark for shooters, popularising the inclusion of more complex plots and puzzle-solving elements within the genre.
