Martina Navratilova (USA, b. Czechoslovakia) made a total of 21 appearances at the season-ending WTA [Women’s Tennis Association] Finals, in 1974-89 and 1991-94. She won the event a record eight times, in 1978-79, 1981 and 1983-86. Two tournaments were held in 1986, both won by Navratilova.

- Chris Evert, Steffi Graf and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario all made 13 appearances at the WTA Finals. As of the end of the 2018 season, Serena Williams is the most prolific active player at the Finals, with nine appearances (2001-02, 2004, 2007-09 and 2012-14).

- Only the women’s singles players ranked 1-8 at the end of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) tournament preceding the Finals, determined by results throughout the season, are invited to take part in the event. Five best-of-three-set matches (three in the group stages, the semi-final and the final) must be won to secure the title.

The WTA Tour Championships were inaugurated in 1972. The tournament was held in Boca Raton (Florida), Los Angeles, New York, Oakland (California), Munich, Madrid, Doha and Istanbul before moving to the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang in 2014. The WTA Finals will relocate to Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China, from 2019.
