Roger Federer (Switzerland) has made a total of 17 appearances at the season-ending ATP Finals, in 2002–15 and 2017–19. He has won the event a record six times, in 2003–04, 2006–07 and 2010–11.

Respectively, Andre Agassi (1988–2005) and Ivan Lendl (1980–91) made 13 and 12 appearances at the ATP Finals. 2018 finalist Novak Djokovic has also made 12 appearances (2007–16 and 2018–19).

Federer’s 17th ATP Finals campaign came to an end with a 3-6, 4-6 semi-final defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas. As of 16 November 2019, his win-loss record at the tournament stood at 59-17. He has won more matches and competed in more finals (10) than any other player.

Only the men’s singles players ranked 1-8 at the end of the ATP tournament preceding the Finals, determined by results throughout the season, are invited to take part in the event. Five best-of-three-set matches (three in the group stages, the semi-final and the final) must be won to secure the title.

The tournament was known as the Masters Grand Prix from 1970 to 1989, the ATP Tour World Championships from 1990 to 1999, the Tennis Masters Cup from 2000 to 2008 and the ATP World Tour Finals from 2009 to 2016. It was held in Tokyo, Paris, Barcelona, Boston, Melbourne, Stockholm, Houston, New York, Frankfurt, Hanover, Lisbon, Sydney and Shanghai before moving to the O2 Arena, London, UK, in 2009.
