The most home runs hit by a Major League Baseball (MLB) team in a season is 307, achieved by the 2023 Atlanta Braves and the 2019 Minnesota Twins (both USA).

The Twins’ 307th home run of the season was hit by Jason Castro (USA) on 29 September 2019.

The 2019 Twins team, nicknamed the “Bomba Squad”, smashed the record of 267 home runs set one year previously by the New York Yankees.

Before the Yankees, the Seattle Mariners’ record of 264 had stood for 21 years.

The Yankees came close to matching the Twins’ unprecedented tally in 2019 but ultimately fell one home run short with a total of 306.

According to a study commissioned by the MLB to investigate 2019’s sudden surge in home runs, a four-person committee of scientists found that the year’s baseballs had less drag on average than in previous seasons.

The report attributed the spike to inconsistencies in the seam height of the baseballs, as well as “changes in player behaviour”, with batters connecting with the ball 6,776 times throughout the season – over 650 more than the previous record set in 2017.

The Twins’ record was equalled by the Atlanta Braves on 1 October 2023, when Marcell Ozuna (Dominican Republic) hit his team’s 307th home run of the year during the ninth inning of the regular-season finale.

The Braves’ top batter was Matt Olson, who hit 54 home runs to become the 48th MLB player ever to register 50 in a season.

A total of five Braves players (Matt Olson, Ronald Acuna Jr., Marcell Ozuna, Austin Riley, and Ozzie Albies) hit over 30 home runs throughout the season, which is more than any other team in MLB history.

No other team reached 250 home runs in the 2023 season – the Dodgers finished second with 249.
