Costliest JRPG

In order to stage Cloud Strife’s spectacular journey, the then publisher of Final Fantasy VII, Square is reported to have allocated a combined development and marketing budget of $145 million. Not only does this make Final Fantasy VII the most expensive Japanese role-playing-game of all time, but it ranks the JRPG among the most expensive video games created of any genre, ahead of Grand Theft Auto IV, Battlefield 4, and Disney Infinity, all of which are said to have cost at least $100 million.
