La Rinconada, with an altitude of 5,100 m (16,732) is the highest altitude permanent human settlement in the world. Location on Mount Ananea in south-east Peru, it is home to around 50,000 people, but with temperatures normally below 0 degrees centigrade and access only via a dangerous mountain path, it has few tourists and lacks plumbing, rubbish collection, sanitation, hospitals and hotels. The economy is largely based on unregulated gold mines.
