The most wins of one Grand Slam singles tennis tournament (open era, female) is 9, and was achieved by Martina Navratilova (USA, b. Czechoslovakia), at the Wimbledon Championships in London, UK, in 1978–79, 1982–87 and 1990.

No other player, male or female, had won more titles at one Grand Slam tournament in the open era (since 1968) until Rafael Nadal (Spain) brought home his ninth (2014), 10th (2017) and 11th (2018) titles at the French Open.

Chris Evert (seven French Open titles), Steffi Graf (seven Wimbledon titles) and Serena Williams (seven Wimbledon titles and seven Australian Open titles) are next on the list of females with the most open-era wins of a Grand Slam tournament. Margaret Court (USA) won 11 Australian Open titles (1960–66, 1969–71, 1973), but only four were in the open era. Before 1968, the tournament was known as the Australian Championships and did not feature professional players.

Navratilova retired in 2006, having won 167 WTA (Women's Tennis Association) tennis titles during her career – a record for a man or woman.

The 1968 French Open was the first Grand Slam to be staged in the open era (and the first to offer prize money), allowing amateurs and professionals to compete together for the first time.
