Diede de Groot (Netherlands) won her 23rd Grand Slam wheelchair singles title at The Wimbledon Championships in London, UK, on 13 July 2024, defeating compatriot and doubles partner Aniek van Koot 6–4, 6–4 on No.1 Court. Her sixth triumph on the grass at SW19 (2017–18, 2021–24) extended her winning streak at the majors to 15 consecutive tournaments and added more silverware to her previous victories at the Australian Open (six, in 2018–19 and 2021–24), French Open (five, in 2019 and 2021–24) and US Open (six, in 2018–23). De Groot was the first professional tennis player in any discipline to win each of the four Grand Slam singles tournaments at least five times.
De Groot’s hard-fought victory against van Koot moved her two wins ahead of compatriot Esther Vergeer, who secured 21 Grand Slam titles in 2002–12. Vergeer – indisputably the greatest-ever female wheelchair player until the emergence of de Groot – claimed nine Australian Opens (2002–04, 2006–09 and 2011–12), six French Opens (2007–12) and six US Opens (2005–07 and 2009–11) before announcing her retirement in 2013.
At the conclusion of Wimbledon 2024, De Groot had also won 19 Grand Slam wheelchair doubles titles – five at the Australian Open (2019 and 2021–24), six at the French Open (2018–22 and 2024), three at Wimbledon (2018–19 and 2023) and five at the US Open (2017–19 and 2021–22) – and gold medals in singles and doubles at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
De Groot was denied the opportunity to make it 24 Grand Slam wheelchair singles titles (and a fourth consecutive calendar-year Grand Slam featuring all four major tournaments) when the senior wheelchair competitions at the 2024 US Open were cancelled due to scheduling conflicts with the Paralympic Games in Paris, France.
