The most orbital launches in one year is 101, achieved by the Soviet Union in 1982.

The majority of these launches were carrying military communications and observation satellites, though there were also several launches related to the construction, resupply and crewing of the Salyut 7 space station. The Soviet Union's high volume of orbital launches (more than five times as many as the US in the same year) was the consequence of the limitations of Soviet satellite technology. Typically each Soviet satellite constellation required a far greater number of launches to achieve the same coverage as its American equivalent.
