The first black-and-white striped zebra pedestrian crossings were the 1,000 experimental versions installed across the UK in 1949 during a “Pedestrian Safety Week”. Blue-and-yellow and red-and-white stripes were also trialled. The first official and permanent installation followed in Slough, UK, in 1951.
