Tennis player Roger Federer (Switzerland) has won six Laureus World Sports Awards, including an unrivalled five Sportsman of the Year trophies, in 2005-2008 and 2018. His sixth award, and his second at the 2018 ceremony, was for 2017’s Comeback of the Year, taking his tally of Grand Slam titles to 19 (currently 20, as of 9 September 2018) on his way back to the top of the world rankings at the age of 36 after a career-threatening knee injury.
Other multiple Laureus winners include: tennis player Serena Williams (four Sportswoman of the Year awards, in 2003, 2010, 2016 and 2018, and one Comeback of the Year award, in 2007); sprinter Usain Bolt (four Sportsman of the Year awards, in 2009-10, 2013 and 2017); surfer Kelly Slater (four Action Sportsperson of the Year, in 2007, 2009 and 2011-12; tennis player Novak Djokovic (three Sportsman of the Year awards, in 2012 and 2015-16).
Federer has also been nominated for World Sportsman of the Year twice, in 2004 (when F1’s Michael Schumacher won the award) and 2010 (when sprinter Usain Bolt won). Bolt has won Sportsman of the Year four times (2009-10, 2013 and 2017).
The 2018 ceremony was held in Monaco on 27 February 2018 and honoured sporting achievements in 2017.
The annual Laureus World Sports Awards, often referred to as the sporting equivalent of the Oscars, celebrate the achievements of athletes from across the sporting world and showcase the work of Laureus Sport for Good, a charity which “uses the power of sport to end violence, discrimination and disadvantage, proving that sport can change the world”.
