The first player born in the 21st century to win a tournament on the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) tour was Olga Danilović (Serbia, b. 23 January 2001), who defeated Russia’s Anastasia Potapova 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 in the final of the Moscow River Cup in Russia on 29 July 2018, aged 17 years 187 days.
Danilović was the first ‘lucky loser’ to win a WTA singles title – entering the main draw despite suffering a loss in the final round of qualifying.
Danilović defeated top seed (and world number 10) Julia Goerges in the quarter-finals.
Potapova (b. 30 March 2001) also contested the final as a 17-year-old and would have taken the record had she emerged victorious.
