On 26 September 2018, after a change of policy by Sony, Epic's hugely popular third-person shooter Fortnite Battle Royale (Epic, 2017) became the first game to allow cross-play on all major gaming platforms. This included Sony's PS4, Microsoft's Xbox One, the Nintendo Switch and the PC, as well as Android and iOS mobile devices. Sony had earlier blocked calls to enable cross-play for Fortnite on the PS4, but after pressure from gamers and Epic, finally found a solution to enable cross-play that was first tested in an open beta on the above date. To help players who had created separate accounts to play Fortnite on the PS4 and on other platforms, Epic announced that it would allow players to merge all of their Fortnite accounts, with a full solution being made available in November 2018.

Epic's full announcement from 26 September 2018, regarding merging accounts read: “For players who created an extra account to play Fortnite on multiple console platforms, we’re working on two things. 1) An account-merging feature to combine Battle Royale purchases, coming in November. 2) Enabling unlinking a console from one Fortnite account, and relinking to another Fortnite account. Coming in a few days.”
