The tallest living animal is the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis), found in the dry savannah and open woodland areas of sub-Saharan Africa. An adult male giraffe typically measures between 4.6 and 5.5 metres (15–18 feet) tall.

The tallest ever recorded was a male Masai giraffe (G. c. tippelskirchi) named George, received at Chester Zoo on 19 June 1960 from Kenya. Standing 5.8 metres (19 feet), his horns almost grazed the roof of the 6.1-metre (20-feet) high Giraffe House when he was nine years old. George died on 22 July 1969.
