Of the 8,688 or so known species of amphibian in the world, Brazil is home to at least 1,222 (as of October 2023), meaning that approximately 14% of all amphibian species are natural residents within this country's borders.
This comprises 1,178 from the order Anura (frogs and toads), 39 belonging to Gymnophiona (caecilians) and five to Caudata (salamanders).
Reasons for such a high number of amphibians include Brazil's large size – it is the fifth-largest country in the world – as well as the fact that some 60% of the nation is covered by rainforest, which is a prime habitat for these moisture-dependent animals.
Another factor behind high rates of species discovery is the number of researchers working in a given region, e.g., there may be lesser-studied, less-accessible countries with more species (or at least more species proportionate to area).
