The Siberian ibex (Capra sibirica) lives at higher altitudes than any other ungulate (hoofed animal) – at up to 6,700 metres (21,981 feet) above sea level on steep slopes and alpine meadows in the Himalayas. Nearby, on the Tibetan Plateau, the wild yak (Bos mutus) is found at elevations up to 6,100 metres (20,013 feet).

By length and weight, the Siberian ibex is considered the largest member of the goat family (Capra; it is only exceeded in height by the markhor (Capra falconeri).

These ibex are generally found at higher altitudes above the tree line during the summer months while seeking fresh pasture, moving to lower elevations in the winter to avoid the most extreme weather conditions.
