The first Apple Store shop in the world dedicated to selling computers and other products made by the Apple company was opened on 19 May 2001, at Tysons Corner in McLean, Virginia, USA. It offered path-breaking lifestyle-focused minimalist design and a Genius Bar customer support facility. The first customer, Chris Barylick, had been queuing for six hours.

Another Apple Store was also opened on 19 May 2001 – in Glendale Galleria in Glendale, California - but owing to time differences this was 3 hours later than the version in Virginia.
