The first modern Olympic champion was James Connolly (USA), who won the hop, skip, jump at the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, on 6 April 1896. He produced a leap of 13.71 m to finish more than one metre ahead of the field, becoming the first recorded Olympic champion since the Armenian boxer Prince Varasdates 1,527 years earlier, in AD 369.
Connolly went on to finish second in the high jump and third in the long jump at the 1896 Games.
