The best-selling TV entertainment format is Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? (Sony Pictures Television), with 102 international versions as of 2018 according to "Tracking The Giants: The Top 100 Travelling TV Formats 2018–19" by analysts K7Media. The multiple-choice quiz show was devised by David Briggs, Mike Whitehill and Steven Knight and first aired on the UK's ITV network on 4 September 1998. Over its lifetime, the show has appeared in at least 123 different variations, including more than 80 languages.

The format of WWTBAM? is – or at least was – strictly protected, so the set, music, lighting cues and even fashion label (Armani) for the host is dictated by the format owners. The show's art designer, Andy Walmsley, claims justifiably that his chrome-and-plexiglass set is the "most duplicated scenic design in history".
