According to World Bank estimates, remittances (money sent home by citizens working abroad) represented 34.2% of GDP for the tiny Pacific island nation of Tonga in 2017 (the most recent year for which statistics are available).
Around 12,000 of Tonga's 100,651 citizens are reportedly employed as seasonal workers in New Zealand and Australia. Globally, remittances from overseas workers represent one of the most important sources of income for developing nations.
