The first own goal scored in a FIFA World Cup final was achieved by Mario Mandžukić (Croatia), playing for Croatia against France at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia, on 15 July 2018.
Striker Mario Mandžukić inadvertently headed into his own net after 18 minutes of the 2018 FIFA World Cup final against France. He scored at the right end in the second half but couldn’t prevent Croatia falling to a 4–2 defeat. Mandžukić became only the second player to score for both sides in a World Cup match, after the Netherlands’ Ernie Brandts against Italy in 1978.
