Aaryan set his mind into surpassing the previous record of 3.01 sec. He practiced diligently in order to achieve this feat.

The Importance of Speed Typing in the Digital Age

Today, communication and productivity are intrinsically linked and driven by technology. Speed typing has reshaped how we connect with others, both locally and globally. Speed typing enables quick and efficient text-based exchanges that has made real-time digital conversations possible through messaging platforms, emails and chat apps. We’re able to share information faster, more efficiently, and more accessibly.

Historical Shift

The ability to type or write fast has always been an in-demand skill. Before computers and recording devices rose in popularity; Shorthand, an abbreviated symbolic writing method by hand was formulated with the aim to capture conversations quickly. However, in modern times less than 1% of the global population now use it.

With the introduction of typewriters and then computers, touch typing became a popular technique with a standard QWERTY keyboard in English speaking regions. The typist relies on finger muscle memory instead of sight to type faster without mistakes. QWERTY keyboards are still commonly used on modern touchscreen mobiles but instead of using 8 fingers to type, the smaller mobile screen only requires thumb typing.

Who Produced the First Touchscreen Mobile?

  1. In 1992, IBM introduced the Simon Personal Communicator, the first ever touchscreen mobile phone.
  1. In 2004, Nokia then launched the Nokia 7710. It had Bluetooth and a camera.
  1. This was followed by the LG Prade phone which launched in 2006.
  1. Finally, in 2007 Apple’s iPhone was unveiled. The phone operated with a LG produced touch screen.

Common Techniques Used in High-Speed Alphabet Typing

To excel in high-speed alphabet typing on a mobile touchscreen, there are two areas of particular focus; hand posture and thumb placement. To improve hand posture, avoid tensing fingers and wrists, a relaxed posture reduces fatigue and encourages quick light taps.

Two handed typing is the most efficient method for fast input, the mobile should be held with both hands and use each thumb to type letters on the corresponding keyboard side. For one-handed typing, some mobiles support keyboard size adjustment which makes it easier for one thumb to stretch across all keys, minimising excessive movement and over stretching.

In a typing skills study of more than 37,000 people it was found that autocorrect improved typing speeds by nearly 9wpm, but word prediction slowed people by 2wpm. This is because it took attention away from the keyboard distracting users with word suggestions. Another technique to also improve speed could also be to adopt gesture keyboard entry. This is where users continuously draw from one letter of a word to another. In one study, it was found that older users saw a speed increase of 15% compared to tap-typing

Challenges of Typing the Alphabet on a Touchscreen

Speed typing on touchscreens does include challenges that affect text input quality, often requiring a tradeoff between speed and accuracy. The sensitivity of touchscreens and the compact layout of virtual keyboards can lead to frequent errors, such as accidental inputs or missed keystrokes, especially if typing at speed.

This can be exacerbated when users are multi-tasking, such as walking. The person must divide their attention between typing and navigating their surroundings, increasing the likelihood of errors. The distraction caused by trying to text quickly or fix mistakes can also pose serious safety risks, particularly in environments requiring full awareness, like crossing streets.

Variations in screen responsiveness, sensitivity or calibration issues further hinder efficient typing by causing unregistered touches or incorrect key detection, slowing a user through error deletion or detection.

Fast Alphabet Typing: Interesting Facts and Stats

The average typing speed on a mobile phone is 36.2 wpm with 2.3% uncorrected errors, and is actually closing in on the average desktop typing speed which is 52wpm.

There were significant correlations with age, use of autocorrect, and number of fingers used to type. Unsurprisingly, people aged between 10-19 are the fastest typers tapping out sentences at an average of about 40wpm, while those in their 50s managed only 26wpm. Interestingly, participants who reported to have taken a touch-typing course for typing on desktop were slightly slower than average.

Noteworthy Alphabet Typing Competitions & Records Around the World

The Ultimate Typing Championship, based in the US has desktop speedy typing competitions annually and many winners are also world record holders.

There are various free websites and apps available online that allow a user to test both their mobile and desktop typing agility, making it easy to challenge and compare results between friends.
