Native to the mountainous forests on the border of north-eastern China and the Russian Far East, the Amur, or Manchurian, leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) is the most northerly subspecies of leopard. Its range stretches beyond 45ºN (the 45th Parallel), which marks the halfway point between the equator and the North Pole.

Amur leopards are also the rarest big cats, with only around 65–69 left in the wild based on the last census data from 2015.
