At 05:45 on 27 May 2017, Gurkha soldier Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja (Nepal) started crossing from the top of Everest, the world's highest mountain, along the South Col, to the top of Lhotse, the fourth-highest mountain, where he arrived at 15:55. He then proceeded to the top of Makalu, the fifth-highest mountain, where he arrived at 09:20 on 1 June. In doing so in just 5 days 3 hours 35 minutes, with the aid of bottled oxygen and the assistance of an helicopter to fly from Lukla to Makalu Base Camp, he set a new speed record between three of the higher five 8,000-m mountains.
