Buried metal bridges depend on soil-structure interaction. Typically a very thin metal arch – in this case, corrugated steel – is erected and back-filled with soil. The bridge structure and the soils combine to support the loads. This can provide a cheap, quick and lightweight solution for short-span bridges.
