The largest metal buried bridge span measures 32.39 m (106 ft 3 in) and was achieved by Ministry of Infrastructure Development (UAE) and ViaCon Sp. z o.o. (Poland), in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, on 6 March 2019.
Buried metal bridges depend on soil-structure interaction. Typically a very thin metal arch – in this case, corrugated steel – is erected and back-filled with soil. The bridge structure and the soils combine to support the loads. This can provide a cheap, quick and lightweight solution for short-span bridges.
