The highest point of Neuschwanstein Castle overlooking the village of Hohenschwangau in Bavaria, Germany, rises 213 feet (65 metres) above ground. The Romanesque Revival castle was built upon the ruins of three others, commissioned at great expense by Ludwig II (1845–1886). The foundation stone was laid on 5 September 1869 and building work did not finish until 1892, six years after the Bavarian king’s death.
