Released on 16 May 2011, Terraria (Andrew Spinks and Whitney Baird, 2011) is claimed to have sold as many as 20.5 million copies, although the official figures from VGChartz say 1.64 million. Either way, these sales make it the best-selling open-world 2D platform videogame. Positioned as a 2D alternative to the 3D blockbuilder game Minecraft (Mojang, 2009), it has exploration elements akin to the Metroid series.
