The most wins of the Gordon Bennett Cup (also known as the Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett) is nine, by Vincent Leys (France) between 1997 and 2017. He triumphed with his brother Jean-François Leys in 1997 and 2001–03, Sébastien Rolland in 2009 and 2011–12 and Christophe Houver in 2013 and 2017.
First staged in 1906, the Gordon Bennett Cup is the oldest aviation race. Winners are the pilots who can guide their 1,000-m³ gas balloons the farthest from the launch site. In 2017, Leys and Houver piloted their balloon 1,834.72 km (1,140.04 miles) – from Fribourg in Switzerland to Estonia – to take first place.
