On 23 January 2018, EVE Online players from all over the world gathered in a single solar system within EVE Online, primed for the largest battle ever to take place in CCP Games' space-faring MMORPG. As confirmed by the game's developer, 6,142 pilots converged on one node, in the same system, participating in the same fight – informally called the Siege of Keepstar 9-4R by EVE Online's dedicated community. This topped the previous record for the peak number of players in a single solar system in EVE Online, which was 5,337 pilots, during the battle of M-OEE8 on 10 December 2016.
Despite being the largest gathering of ships, the Siege of Keepstar 9-4R was actually low on action. The siege was predicted to be the largest battle ever seen – not to mention the most costly in terms of damage – but problems with the server and the self-repairing mechanism of the 9-4R keepstar space station (which was the focus of the attack) meant that the aggressors couldn't deal enough damage to destroy the keepstar leading to them abandoning the attack.
