In 2009, "RIBA" (Robot for Interactive Body Assistance) became the first robot nurse capable of lifting patients from a bed and/or a wheelchair. Developed by the Japanese Riken-Tri Research Centre in cooperation with Tokai Rubber Industries, RIBA was presented to the public in August 2009. Weighing about 180 kg, it can lift approximately 60 kg. It has the face of a bear and its body is covered in a soft skin of lightweight urethane, to ensure the comfort of the patient and to put people at ease.

The latest and most advanced version of this technology was presented in February 2015 – a robot called "Robear", which only weighs 140 kg. These robots were developed with the aim of helping in the care of the ageing Japanese population.
