South Korea's Chung Hyeon defeated Russia's Andrey Rublev 3–4, 4–3, 4–2, 4–2 to win the first edition of the Next Gen ATP Finals, staged at the Fiera Milano complex in Milan, Italy, on 7–11 November 2017. Chung, 21, was undefeated in the group stage before seeing off Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals and Rublev in the best-of-five-sets final – Chung's first championship match on the ATP Tour. The tournament featured a number of innovative rules, including first-to-four-game sets (with tie-breaks at 3–3), no lets, a 25-second shot clock (first trialled at the 2017 US Open qualifiers) and the first use of Hawk-Eye at a professional tennis tournament, to make line calls in place of the line judges.

The bespectacled Chung, nicknamed "The Professor", walked away with a cheque for $390,000 (£296,000) for winning five matches at the inaugural tournament.
