On 26 January 2018, "AverageTrey" (USA) became not just the fastest person to complete Super Mario Sunshine (Nintendo, 2002) so far in a 120 Shines run, but also the first to break the sub-three-hour barrier that had frustrated speed-runners for nearly 16 years. He beat the Nintendo GameCube version of the game in 2 hours 59 minutes 58 seconds, as verified by Speedrun.com. "It’s truly been a journey," he said on his Twitch stream upon achieving the record. "There haven’t really been any breakthroughs since an advanced trick with the rocket nozzle known as 'Rocket Rollouts' became a movement option a few months ago, and even that only saves a couple of seconds in a handful of levels," AverageTrey told Kotaku.com: "It simply came down to better execution, getting a proper spread of good luck on the random aspects of the run, and the ability to play under high pressure for 1–2 hours while on amazing pace."
