The world's largest penguin facility is the Polk Penguin Conservation Center at Detroit Zoo in Michigan, USA. It has an area of 33,000 square feet, and includes a 326,000-gallon, 25-ft-deep aquatic area where visitors are able to observe as over 80 penguins from four different species explore their home. This spectacular facility incorporates an underwater gallery with a huge acrylic window and two acrylic tunnels that provides breathtaking views of the penguins above, around, and below the water surface. The four penguin species exhibited here are the gentoo penguin Pygoscelis papua, king penguin Aptenodytes patagonicus, macaroni penguin Eudyptes chrysolophus, and southern rockhopper penguin E. chrysocome.
As stated on Detroit Zoo's official website, the Polk Penguin Conservation Center received the 2017 Exhibit Award from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). The award is the top honour bestowed annually upon accredited institutions for excellence in exhibit design by the AZA, the accrediting body for zoos and aquariums in the USA and seven other countries worldwide.
