As mascots for competing consoles, Sonic and Mario started off as sworn enemies. That all changed in 2001 when Sega released an enhanced port of its action-platformer Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for Nintendo's GameCube. Considering Sega and Nintendo's famous rivalry throughout the 1990s, this represented a significant "first" for the videogame industry.
