In November 2017, international classification society Bureau Veritas, approved the world's first class-rated 3D-printed ships propeller. The propeller, known as the WAAMpeller, was created out of a collaboration between a number of companies, namely RAMLAB, Promarin, Autodesk, Bureau Veritas and Damen. The project started in April 2017 when Promarin provided the design of the triple-blade propeller manufactured by Port of Rotterdam’s RAMLAB (Rotterdam Additive Manufacturing LAB) using Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) techniques – hence the propeller's name. The propeller itself comprises 298 layers of Nickel Aluminium Bronze alloy, and is designed for use in tug-boat propulsion.
