Pope Benedict XVI (DEU) became the first Holy Father to acquire a Twitter account. Using the handle @Pontifex (Latin for "bridge builder"), he tweeted his first message on 12 December 2012. It read: "Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart." In fact, His Holiness (aka Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger) had eight accounts altogether, allowing him to tweet in eight different languages.

Pope Benedict XVI was to send 39 tweets in all, the last of which appeared on 28 February 2013, the day he officially resigned the papacy.
