On 22 January 2010, NASA astronaut Timothy J Creamer (USA) tweeted live from space for the first time. He posted the following message: "Hello Twitterverse! We r now LIVE tweeting from the International Space Station--the 1st live tweet from Space! :) More soon, send your ?s." Creamer and his colleagues used Twitter to post updates on their mission onboard the space station. Astronauts had previously used Twitter during missions. For example, en route to the Hubble Space Telescope in May 2013, Mike Massimino had sent the message "From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!" However, Massimino's message was first emailed to NASA's Johnson Space Center, who then uploaded it to Twitter. By contrast, Creamer's tweet was the first to be sent live.

Unmanned spacecraft had also sent tweets earlier than Creamer's 2010 message. The Mars Phoenix Lander once had one of the most followed accounts on Twitter. On one auspicious occasion in 2008, it tweeted: "Are you ready to celebrate? Well, get ready: We have ICE!!!!! Yes, ICE, *WATER ICE* on Mars! w00t!!! Best day ever!!"
