As of 21 December 2017, Danish educational technology company Labster offered 68 separate laboratory simulations on its website (www.labster.com). The company creates interactive virtual-reality labs that allow students to embark on what Labster terms "open-ended investigations" across a range of six disciplines: biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, general sciences and medicine.
Each laboratory session is run according to the practices of a real-life laboratory. Thus:
1. The theory of the lab is presented to the user, or learned, prior to conducting the session.
2. A clear task or objective must be completed.
3. The learning outcome is definable and achievable (through questions or writing a report after the lab session).
As of 21 December 2017, the educational establishments that use Labster's VR laboratory environments include: California State University, Harvard, Gwinnett Technical College, MIT, Exeter University, University of New Haven, Stanford, University of New England, Trinity College, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Hong Kong.
