American Sloane Stephens had a world ranking of 83 when she lifted the winner's trophy at the US Open on 9 September 2017. Her maiden Grand Slam title was all the more remarkable for the fact that it came just 69 days after returning from an 11-month injury lay-off that had seen her ranking plummet to 957.

The record excludes Kim Clijsters (Belgium), who had no ranking at all when she won the tournament in 2009.

Stephens became just the fifth unseeded female to win a Grand Slam title in the open era. The world's top 32 players are seeded for the Slams.

She was the first American female Grand Slam winner other than Serena Williams or Venus Williams since Jennifer Capriati won the Australian Open in 2002.

Stephens is the second-lowest-ranked player to win a Grand Slam title. Australia's Chris O'Neil was ranked 111 when she won the Australian Open in 1978.

Stephens, 24, beat 15th seed Madison Keys (USA) in the final, 6–3, 6–0.
