The most gold medals won at a single FINA World Championships by a swimmer is 8, achieved by Olivia Smoliga (USA) at the 14th FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in Hangzou, China, on 11–16 December 2018.


At the 2018 short course championship, Smoliga triumphed in the women’s 50 m and 100 m backstroke, the women’s 4 x 50 m and 4 x 100 m freestyle relays, the women’s 4 x 50 and 4 x 100 m medley relays, and the mixed 4 x 50 m freestyle and medley relays. She only swam in the heats of the women’s 4 x 50 m freestyle and the mixed 4 x 50 m freestyle, but still received a gold. Smoliga surpassed Michael Phelps, winner of seven golds at the 2007 FINA World Championships, and Caeleb Dressel, who also claimed seven titles at the 2017 FINA World Championships.
