Evin Lewis (Trinidad & Tobago) made 176 runs for the West Indies before inside-edging a ball into his foot and retiring hurt from a One-Day International (ODI) against England at The Oval in London, UK, on 27 September 2017. It was the highest "retired hurt" score in any format of cricket since Australia's Charles Bannerman made 165 against England during the first ever Test match on 15–16 March 1877 – 140 years 195 days before Lewis' aborted innings!
Bannerman's 165 was made during the first two days of the first ever Test match, in Melbourne, Australia. It remains the highest Test score by a retiring batsman.
Sachin Tendulkar's 163 for India against New Zealand on 8 March 2009 was previously the highest ODI score by a retiring batsman.
Lewis' 130-ball innings featured 17 fours and seven sixes.
He retired with 22 balls of the West Indies' innings remaining.
Only Chris Gayle (215) and Viv Richards (189 not out and 181) have made higher ODI scores for the West Indies.
