According to the FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale), the quickest time for an aircraft to climb to an altitude of 9,000 m (29,528 ft) is just 44.18 seconds, achieved by Soviet test pilot Nikolai Sadovnikov (Russia) in a Sukhoi P-42 jet aircraft on 10 March 1987, at Podmoskovnoe, 30 km (19 miles) south-east of Moscow, Russia.

The Sukhoi P-42 was a modified version of the Sukhoi Su-27 "Flanker" jet fighter, from which all of the weaponry, radar and electronics equipment was removed in order to reduce the weight, and the engines modified to develop 1,000 kg (2,200 pounds) more thrust.

The aircraft was nicknamed the "Streak Flanker" – a nod to the "Streak Eagle", a modified F-15 Eagle jet fighter that held the previous fastest-climb record.
