Lord's was opened in 1814 – 70 years before it staged its first Test match. The venue was named after its founder, Yorkshireman Thomas Lord (1755-1832), who played first-class cricket from 1787 to 1816.

England vs. Australia on 21–23 July 1884 was the 15th Test match staged overall. England have been involved in 137 of the 139 Test matches at Lord's, with a record of 55 wins, 50 draws and 32 defeats. The venue also hosted Australia vs. South Africa in July 1912 and Australia vs. Pakistan in July 2010.

The first five-wicket haul and the first hundred at Lord's came in the venue's opening Test match: England's Edmund "Ted" Peate took 6 for 85 in Australia's first innings, while England batsman Allan Steele scored 148 in the hosts' first innings.

Lord’s, home to Middlesex County Cricket Club, has a seating capacity of 30,000. The ground is privately owned by the Marylebone Cricket Club.
