On 27 August 2017, the battle royale survival shooter PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (Bluehole) temporarily topped the Steam charts for people playing the game at the same time – more than 800,000. It was the first time that a game not published by Valve, the makers of Steam, had achieved this since Steam's initial release in 2003. As of 6 September 2017, it had the second highest ever peak players on the Steam distribution platform, behind Valve's iconic MOBA Dota 2, but, amazingly, ahead of Valve's long-running multiplayer FPS Counter-Strike.
Despite being in Early Access, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds had earlier set a glut of other Steam records for concurrent players including most peak players for a non-Valve videogame and most players for an Early Access game.
