On 28 June 2017, Wayde van Niekerk (South Africa) ran a world-best time of 30.81 seconds for the 300 m at an IAAF World Challenge meeting in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The previous best time of 30.85 seconds over the rarely run distance, achieved by Michael Johnson (USA), had stood since 24 March 2000.
The rarely run 300 m is not considered an official distance by the IAAF, which acknowledges only “world-best” – rather than world-record – times.
