Sierra On-Line's 1983 boxing game Sierra Championship Boxing features a fighter database containing around 20 historical World Heavyweight champs and contenders from different eras, with "detailed statistics" to determine each boxer's strengths and weaknesses. Available boxers included Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, George Foreman, Jess Willard, Jersey Joe Walcott, Joe Frazier and Mike Tyson. The larger database also includes fictional pugilists, including a boxing kangaroo and a space alien, while players could also create their own.
The game was considered highly innovative at the time. Its strategy mode allows players to either take the role of trainer/manager, while its arcade mode puts players in direct control of their boxer in the ring.
