The most swimming gold medals won at the World Aquatics Championships (female) is 21, achieved by Katie Ledecky (USA) between 2013 and 2023.


Ledecky won the 800 m and 1,500 m freestyle titles at the 20th FINA World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, to extend her women’s record to 21 gold medals. She has claimed freestyle world titles in the 200 m (one), 400 m (four), 800 m (six), 1,500 m (five), 4 x 100 m (one) and 4 x 200 m (four). Only Michael Phelps (26) has won more swimming golds at the championships. Ledecky, however, has won more individual golds – 16, to Phelps’s 15.
