Zombie videogames are spectacularly common, but very few of them let players star as a zombie. Resident Evil Outbreak 1's online mode offers a very temporary opportunity for joining the undead. However, the first game to truly put players into the ragged shoes of a decomposing flesh-chomper was Aspyr's Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse, released in 2005. The comical-but-gory action game sees players assuming the role of an undead salesman as they stumble around 1930s Pennsylvania, USA, looking for brains.

The MMO Urban Dead, released in the same year as Stubbs..., also allows players to begin the game as either a human or a zombie. However, the game is text-only and zombies can be revivified.
