Initially launched as open beta on 29 April 2013, Wynncraft (by the "The Wynncraft Team") is a free-to-play MMORPG built and run entirely inside Mojang's sandbox hit Minecraft. As of 4 July 2017, the game had attracted 1,712,876 unique users since its inception, with a current player-base of around 100,000 role-players. The game takes place inside a sprawling fantasy overworld that measures roughly 22 million square-metres (approximately 4,000 blocks x 5,500 blocks) with further explorable areas outside of the overworld such as dungeons and quest-areas. One of the game's creators, Francis Mailloux, explained: "The development of our map is unique because the landscape was fully custom-designed and every building and feature was completely hand built, in contrast to the more traditional programmatically generated map used with more traditional mass Minecraft projects."

The game's official full launch was on 6 July 2013. It was created by three people: Francis Mailloux, Charles Batchelor and Isaac Pohl-Zaretsky.

Mailloux added: "Our team has completely transformed the way Minecraft works, both in terms of code and gameplay. We have written over 100,000 lines of code (more programming than many full-fledged games) to make Wynncraft operational as an MMORPG in order to handle literally thousands of entities (monsters, etc) and hundreds of players on the same system (which compares to traditional Minecraft’s limitations of only a few hundred entities). We have a large community that enjoy the game so much they volunteer to help contribute to the game’s development – making quests, buildings, art work, etc. Our content team is made up of around 40–50 people from around the world."
