Wynncraft launched as a beta on 29 April 2013, and the free-to-play fantasy RPG - made and played entirely inside Minecraft (Mojang, 2011) - had racked up over 2.9 million players as of 19 March 2021, according to the developers.

It was officially released in full on 6 July 2013, but Wynncraft broke its concurrent player record on 10 August 2024, when 5,777 people logged on to try enjoy 2.0 version, known as Wynncraft Spellbound.

Wynncraft was created by three people: Francis Mailloux, Charles Batchelor and Isaac Pohl-Zaretsky, though it has a much larger team now!

The game takes place inside a sprawling fantasy overworld that, in 2017, measured roughly 22 million m2 (approximately 4,000 blocks x 5,500 blocks) with further explorable areas outside of the overworld such as dungeons and quest-areas. One of the game's creators, Francis Mailloux, explained: "The development of our map is unique because the landscape was fully custom-designed and every building and feature was completely hand built, in contrast to the more traditional programmatically generated map used with more traditional mass Minecraft projects."
