Released to Steam Early Access on 23 March 2017, Bluehole's PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds took just 16 days to sell 1 million units according to SuperData – a feat completely unheard of for an Early Access game. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is a massively multiplayer battle royal game in which up to 100 players vie for survival after being parachuted onto an island measuring around 8 km x 8 km. As each match progresses, the size of the island's safe area decreases in size, forcing remaining players into tense showdowns. The game was created by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene, who had previously made the ARMA 2 mod DayZ: Battle Royale and worked as a consultant on Sony's H1Z1 titles.
Steam Early Access game is an early access release platform available through Valve's Steam. It enables players to purchase unfinished titles that are still being developed. It launched on 20 March 2013. The game is also the fastest Early Access game to gross $100 million in revenue – achieved in 79 days.
